Barbara Morrison has long been a well-kept secret in Los Angeles, a powerful veteran swing/blues singer who puts a lot of feeling and good humor into her vocalizing. She has recorded far too little through the years, making the release of this CD in 1997 a welcome event. Although performing a potentially tired repertoire, Morrison infuses life and sass into her versions. "Confessin' the Blues" sounds fresh and new, "Stormy Monday" segues effectively into "Everyday I Have the Blues," "My Funny Valentine" is taken funky (she also does a fine job with the R&B-ish "Use Me"), and even "God Bless the Child" cooks. In fact, the only ballad of the energetic date is the final number, "Tenderly." Backed by a fine big band arranged by Bill Liston (with some solo space for trumpeters Wayne Bergeron and Ron Stout, trombonist Andy Martin, altoist Brandon Fields and Liston's tenor), Barbara Morrison excels in this setting, displaying an extroverted and winning personality along with an appealing voice. Recommended. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi
