The rope by which the upper portion of a spanker, trysail, etc. is hauled in along a gaff towards the mast. In small craft one employed to haul in a loose jib; a term also given to any rope used to haul in a sail, spar etc. Heel-rope. A rope employed for launching out a jib-boom; a term also given to the thin rope, by which the inner end of a studdingsail-boom is secured to a yard. Leech-lines. Ropes attached (between the clew and earing) to the leech-ropes of a course, topgallant-sail, etc., then passed through blocks, on the yard under the rim of the top etc. afterwards descending on deck. Employed to stretch the upper portion of the leech-ropes along the yard, when the sail is clewed up; they are called after the sails with which they are connected. Lower-leech-lines.
