Randwick is one of the most beautiful of Sydney's suburbs, whilst Coogee s one of the most popular of its seaside resorts. Coogee Bay is an indent of the Pacific Ocean. Inward roll the waves, wild and white and beautiful, and running in one continuous sheet of foam up the beach There are two good hotels at Coogee, the Baden Baden (a fashionable resort), and the Coogee Bay Hotel, besides numerous tea and coffee houses. There is also a well-kept aquarium, with its skating rink, music hall, and pleasure grounds. From Randwick there is a very charming drive to Botany along the Long Bay Road, a coast road. Randwick is also connected with Waverley by a tramline, and it will be found quite easy to visit Bondi from Coogee by this means, or vice versa. PARRAMATTA as a township, is nearly as old as Sydney. The land about Sydney was not found suited to the cultivation of com and other products, such as an infant colony required. Governor Phillip, therefore, soon after forming a settlement at the head of Sydney Cove, in 1788, began to look about for land upon which grain, &c, could be grown. At the head of what is now termed the Parramatta River he found land which he considered suitable for the purpose, and he accordingly removed about eighty persons to this place, to which he gave the name of Rose Hill. Subsequently the native name, "Parramatta," was generally adopted. Farms were laid out on the plain, and it was here that the first grain in the colony was raised. A large house now somewhat antiquated in appearance, was, until late years, used as a country residence by the Governors of the colony. Surrounding the house is ...
