Ice Ages is one of eighteen volumes from the Time-Life book series Planet Earth. This series examines the workings of planet earth, from the geological wonders of its continents to the marvels of its atmosphere and its ocean depths. This volume is a good introduction to the complex rhythms of cold weather associated with the advance and retreat of ice sheets and glaciers during the earth's many ice ages. Topics covered include the rise of modern humans, the life and mind of ice age man, the Neanderthals, the rise and fall of sea levels, the extinction of giant mammals, Louis Agassiz and his ice age theory, various theories explaining the causes of ice ages (including precession of the equinoxes, the tilt of the earth, and eccentricity of the earth's orbit), Milutin Milankovitch and his astronomical theories of ice ages, volcanic eruptions and their impact on climate, solar variations and sunspot activity, fossil plankton/coral and ocean temperatures, magnetic polarity, sea floor sediment cores, paleomagnetism, the use of ice core samples to reconstruct past climates, carbon dioxide and its relationship to ice ages, the Maunder minimum (sunspot activity), and the next ice age. What I found interesting is that the book supports the idea that another ice age is imminent in between 3,000 and 7,000 years from now. However, the book also points out that human induced global warming (and there is only one paragraph on this) could delay or lessen any future ice age. My goal in reading this book was to gain more information about a highly relevant topic (climate change); I was not disappointed. In sum, Ice Ages is a highly readable book on a multidimensional puzzle whose pieces are constantly being redefined.
