Seller's Description:
Very Good in Good jacket. First/first (UK) edition in edgeworn dustjacket with darkening at margins. Not price clipped. Original British price front flap bottom corner: 25/-NET. Black cloth boards with gold lettering on spine. Mild tanning to rear end pages. Rose colored topstain. Solid binding. Interiors clean without markings. No underlining. No side-notes. Part two of excellent 3-volume autobiography of John Lehmann (1907-1987). This was the followup to The Whispering Gallery (1955) and would be followed by The Ample Proposition (1966). John Lehmann was a publisher, editor & poet. His novelist sister Rosamond Lehmann (1901-1990) published a dozen or more books that deserve to be remembered, including Dusty Answer (1927), The Weather in the Streets (1936), The Ballad and the Source (1944) and The Echoing Grove (1953). Another sister Beatrix Lehmann (1903-1979) was an actress, theater director and also published several works of fiction & nonfiction. I have not read any Beatrix Lehmann books, but I have seen her in at least two wonderful films, The Spy Who Came In From the Cold (1965) and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1966) and at least one episode of Doctor Who in 1978 (Season 16, with the Fourth Doctor). Lehmann played Professor Emilia Rumford in the episode 'The Stones of Blood'. John Lehmann had a third sister, but I am unaware of any contributions she gave to the history of the arts. However his father was Rudolph Chambers 'R.C. ' Lehmann (1856-1929) was a member of the House of Commons for the Liberal Party and a comic writer, contributing to Punch magazine as well as being a founding editor for Granta magazine. Quite a family.
