Newby might well have faced the age-old dilemma of whether to play it safe on his first album or attempt something novel. As it happens, he has found a way to do both. The theme of the wanderer in song recitals is a familiar one, with plenty of songs by Schubert and the other German Romantics available. Newby's contribution is to join this theme to folk song arrangements, where a longing for home is also a frequent theme. His glowing voice is especially attractive in these and Britten's arrangement of the limpid American title song, and the framing of the program with American and Irish songs is effective after the mood builds and darkens into Mahler's Revelge and Urlicht.
