A valuable self-help resource
My therapist recommended that I try this book after she saw Brown doing a TED talk on the subject of shame, and I've been using it as a sort of textbook/workbook, reading a chapter at a time. As Brown says at the beginning of the book, this is not an easy subject. Shame is used to control us, isolate us and make us silent about the things that hurt us. But by practicing compassion and empathy for others and learning how to appropriately reveal our experiences and feelings to others, we can relieve ourselves of toxic shame and live more authentic and positive lives. This is a very well-written and accessible book and though it's geared towards women I think anyone could benefit from reading it.
