Originally released in 1959, British "trad" trumpeter Humphrey Lyttelton's album of tributes to a dozen legends of classic jazz, big-band, and swing music combines time-honored material with what in the late '50s were up-to-date arrangements (by Mo Miller and trombonist Eddie Harvey) and hi-fi production. This is very much a product of its day, polished and played to perfection. Lyttelton used two slightly different octets, a nonet built around four clarinets, and a big band. Joe Temperley is heard throughout providing substantial support with both the baritone sax and the bass clarinet. There are solid renditions of Fats Waller's "Alligator Crawl," Sidney Bechet's "Southern Sunset," and Sy Oliver's "For Dancers Only," a souvenir of the Jimmie Lunceford Orchestra. Other bandleaders commemorated here are Duke Ellington, Lionel Hampton, Count Basie, Chick Webb, Artie Shaw, Bunny Berigan, Benny Goodman, and Tommy Dorsey. Lyttelton carefully chose "When It's Sleepy Time Down South" as the vehicle for his tribute to Louis Armstrong, explaining how "the problem with Louis was to find a number that wasn't so heavily slanted on trumpet that any rendition of it would be bound to degenerate into an imitation." A warm and carefully rendered album of traditionally inspired jazz performed by some of Britain's very best latter-day swing players. ~ arwulf arwulf, Rovi
