Excerpt from How to Win the War I like to see so much enthusiasm for a job as you are showing here. You are here to find out what you can do to help win the war. Now, what is it that your chairman wants you to do? That is what I want to talk to you about: what the job is and the necessity for this work. I don't know whether we knew how thoroughly unprepared we were. Our unpreparedness was complete. But when we come to make an inventory of what is necessary; when we come to understand what a gigantic task it is to equip an army; when we come to know something about modern warfare and understand that it is a matter of equipment as much as it is of men; then we begin to see something of the size of this undertaking.
