Of all hypnotics, chloral is by far the most deadly, and should never, under any circumstances, be taken except under medical supervision. To epitomise what has already been said regarding sleeplessness, its rational cure should be arrived at, in each separate case, by seeking out the cause, and then removing the morbid condition of which it is but a natural sequence. THE MEANS OF PROLONGING LIFE. The true science of health and longevity is entirely based upon a due comprehension of the following principles: First, a thorough knowledge of those destructive agencies which shorten its duration; secondly, a clear insight into those means recognized by science which favour its prolongation. Let us consider the enemies of life, and become conversant with their modus operandi, in order to be in a position to recognize and avoid them. After having duly investigated their conditions, we will subsequently concentrate our attention upon those means which materially and certainly tend to prolong human existence. All things which help to shorten life may be embraced under the following divisions: (i) Everything which lessens the amount of vital power; (2) All circumstances and conditions of life impeding the due performance of our physical organs; (3) That which unduly accelerates waste of vitality; (4) Everything which hinders restoration of vital forces.
