I found thid book of Goldsworthy disappointing. I cannont argue with his claim that the fall of the western Roman Empire was an important event, or that civil wars weakened the Empire.
I did find his discussion of the German invasion of Spain poor. The autor completely ignores the evidence of Zosimus and Orosius that the only troops in Spain at the time of the invasion were the garrison troops, and those brought in from Gaul by Gerontius, supporters of the British usurper Constantine.
The field forces listed in the Notitia came in later in response, not in anticipation of the invasion. Also, when he tells of a former captive at Attila's court, he suppresses his complaint that the Emperors forbad their subjects to posess arms for their own self-defense. I suppose all for the sake of political correctness! Still, internal failures and not invasions were the main reason the west fell.
