Bombal was a fascinating woman, friends with Borges and Neruda (who nicknamed her "la abeja de fuego" ["the fire bee"]); she once shot a lover three times and was acquitted after her lover exempted her from guilt. *La Última Niebla* (extensively revised and published as *House of Mist*) was first published in Argentina in 1934. According to the National Library of Chile, Bombal's novels *La Úlitma Niebla* and *La Amortajada* mark the beginning of the contemporary Chilean novel.
