In writing this book it has not been forgotten that arithmetic is an art, and that for beginners the most essential thing is practice in the art of numbers. A characteristic feature of the book is that the examples, with very few exceptions, in volve only one of the fundamental processes. Begin ners do not possess the ability to follow a chain of reasoning, but they readily acquire new facts and ideas. Therefore the explanations of processes are brief and are illustrated so that there may be a visual basis of comprehension.
