This book is quite misleading
I bought this book from a Gay store when it came out in 1996. They had books, pins, magazines, greeting cards, served coffee, tea, sandwiches, etc. I was struggling with my own homosexuality at the time and I was trying to find books that discussed the subject in neutral or affirming terms. Satinover is at least somewhat trading on his credentials as an MD since he notes that on the cover.
The book starts out very sympathetic, he lists some case histories that he dealt with in his practice or at the hospital he was associated with. Young man with a harsh military father, now sits in the hospital with AIDS or something. He expresses his sadness at the suffering the disease causes and the young man's life cut short. ( It has been a while since I read this book.) Then he gradually starts being more and more critical of homosexuality in general. He made some amazing claims about promiscuity etc. citing several books by homosexual men. Well, I went to the Gay community center and found the actual books - Satinover completely misquoted them and/or took it completely out of context. Very disheartening for book with "Truth" in the title. Then he takes issue with the removal of homosexuality as a mental illness by the American Pyschiatric Assn. in 1973. He goes to great pains to describe some pro gay Dr's speaking at the convention wearing masks (of course they would, in the early 1970s to identify yourself would be career suicide) and the "politics" that led to the removal. Well, if you've ever been involved in any large organization, I can assure you there is ALWAYS maneuvering, politicking and forging of alliances.
By the book's end, he is quoting Bible verses condemning homosexuality. He is surely entitled to his personal and religious views, but that is only truth for him and those who agree and nothing to do with being an MD.
