The Sonatas for solo violin, BWV 1001, 1003, and 1005, would seem the most difficult of all to transcribe for quartet, inasmuch as their appeal derives in large part from the reduction of counterpoint to its most minimal level to adapt it to the solo violin. However, as the Brodsky Quartet points out here, Bach sometimes played these pieces on the clavichord, so the general susceptibility to transcription of Bach's music is definitely still in place.
