Well worth reading, but with this observation: some plays read brilliantly, others must be staged to become effective; Hobson's Choice is somewhere in between. When one sees a brilliant adaptation such as David Lean's film version, one realizes what a gem is waiting to be brought to life. Probably the most difficult role is that of Will Mossop: he must be portrayed as having great potential hiding beneath his completely unprepossessing surface. If the actor portraying him does not show this potential, slowly revealed -- a cautious plodder at first, waiting to be inspired -- the development of the play makes no sense. It's a difficult balancing act, which John Mills in Lean's movie, carries off brilliantly.
