This brief eight-track sampler picks key cuts from several mid-period Ray Charles albums, 1960's The Genius Hits the Road ("Hit the Road Jack"), 1962's Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music, Vols. 1-2 ("You Are My Sunshine"), 1969's Doing His Thing ("Baby Please") and Love Country Style ("If You Were Mine"), and 1971's A Message from the People ("There'll Be No Peace Without All Men as One"), then adds in a spirited live version of "What'd I Say" from a 1962 concert in Berlin (Live in Berlin was eventually released as an album by Pablo Records in 1996) and a wonderful version of "Georgia on My Mind" from Live in Japan, which was originally released as an album in 1975 by Crossover Records. The resulting playlist is on the short side, but it's a nice and sharply concise set, balanced between the live versions of "What'd I Say" and "Georgia on My Mind" and the studio recordings of "Baby Please" and "If You Were Mine," both of which are lesser-known Ray Charles gems.
