Mother, last evening you told us about the beginning of the persecution of the Waldenses in the valleys of Piedmont. Did this continue? Mother. From the period of the melancholy story I related last evening, which you will recollect happened in the year 1400, they remained in the qu iet and peaceable possession of their homes and privileges, for eighty seven years. Caroline. O mother, that was a long time. I think they must have been very thankful and happy. Elizabeth. This would give them time to recruit their strength and multiply their numbers. Mother. Yes; the valleys of Fraissiniere, Argentiere, and Loyre, were filled with them. Peter. O, I read about these places in the Life of Neff. Mother. Yes, my son; these valleys are the very scene of Netf's labors. In the year 1450, a Franciscan monk was sent among them as an inquisitor, to drive them from the country. The inquisitors wouid have them accused of crimes, and take them up and imprison them, and then carry off their property. At length, some of the people who were not Waldenses, seeing how they were abused, applied to Louis XI. king of France, to put a stop to these unjust and cruel proceedings. Peter. Did the king do so, mother1? I thought the kings of France were all zealous Catholics. Mother. They were generally so; but Louis sent orders to the inquisitors to stop the persecution. However, these artful priests contrived to turn the king's letter into a permission to go on. The Waldenses repeatedly tried to get their property again; but, though they had the favor both of Louis XI. and his successor, Charles VIII., they never could obtain justice. Peter.
