He, too, was firmly convinced that the schism in the Church was not to be treated as a mere learned controversy, but that what was most essentially needed was the conversion of the heart from which, much more than from the understanding, all this error and heresy proceeded. He was banished from Ratisbon in 1544. On being threatened that he would be thrown into the Danube he answered calmly: ' I hope to be able to rise to heaven even out of the waters of the Danube.'-He was quite ready, he wrote to an Italian marchioness, to give up his life, if only by so doing he could save the noble and mighty German nation from altogether losing the true faith.1 At Worms he often watched by the sick through whole nights, taking no money and living in poverty. 1 Meyer, Aacliensche Gcschichte, pp. 447 ff.-Agricola, i. 10; Boero, Jaio, p. 47.
