If, like the Belgians, they were no longer subjected to conscription, and the Rhine, the chief source of their wealth, was allowed free communication with the sea, the French markets were no longer Open for the products of. In a word, it seemed as little natural to them to be fellow-citizens of the inhabitants of Konigsberg as of the Parisians, and the liberty of the Pope was no more consolation to them than to the Belgians for being ruled by a Protestant sovereign. They also experienced the inconveniences of foreign occupation, for the Prussian army was in their territory, and they were horribly ill treated by Blucher's soldiers, who had not yet learned to consider the inhabitants of Cologne and Aix - la-chapelle as fellow-countrymen.
