These machines are very powerful when at a draft or whenever there is a sufficient supply of water to be obtained. The following are the dimensions. Height over all 10 feet. Length over all 24 feet 9 inches. Width over all (ordinary) 6 feet 5 inches. Weight without supphes about 9,000 lbs. Pumps 5 inches in diameter, 8-inch stroke. Steam cylinders 8 inches in diameter, 8-inch stroke. These machines are guaranteed to deliver 1,100 gallons per minute. The following letter from the Fire Commission of Detroit gives a most remarkable account of a capacity test of these two engines. FIRE COMMISSION OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN. Office Of The Secretary, Detroit, Mich., December 28, 1892. A. Blood, Esq., Agent Manchester Locomotive Works, Manchester, N. H.: Dear Sir: --Enclosed please find draft No. 295,505 on the National Bank of Commerce of New York for the sum of in payment of Engines Nos. 686 and 687, as per your invoice of Dec. 1, 1892. Kindly forward your receipt for the same to this office. These engines were tested by the Fire Commission one week ago to-day, and with the most satisfactory results. The engines were operated by Engineer Cornelius Bresnahan of Engine Company No. 3, under the supervision of Francis Beaufait, Master Mechanic of this department; and I beg to assure you that had these gentlemen been the personal representatives of the Manchester Locomotive Works, your interests would not have been in better hands.
