He had a natural inclination for study, however, and what little opportunities he had were employed to good advantage. In 1832, he, with his parents, removed to Fairfiold County, Ohio, where he resided with his parents for twelve years. The bent of his mind was for a more thorough and finished education than was afforded by the common schools, and, at the age of seventeen, he entered Marietta College, enduring a great many privations to enjoy the collegiate instructions. He remained in college for two years, recuperating his deplenished purse by teaching school at all available intervals. At the end of two years, financial embarrassments compelled him to entirely relinquish college life, and, as a means of replenishing his finances, he again resorted to the schoolroom. The close of an other year found him with a sufficient surplus and a maturity of years to begin to cast about for a permanent trade or profession, the rush of years and press of business considerations having compelled him to give up the cherished ambition of his life--that of a thorough classical education. The practice of medicine was his adopted profession, and, at the age of twenty, he entered the office of Drs. Hyde & Evans, at Rushville, Ohio, where he prosecuted his study at intervals until 184'J, relying on pedagoging in the winter to support him in his professional studies. In 1842, he was admitted to practice, and began his professional career at Geneva, Ohio, remaining there two years.
