He was an Indian trader, who arrived in 1829. The settlement was first known as Cloud's Town. The lands were sold by the Government in 1830, and George Russell, Aaron Harrison, Wm. Allison, Thomas Vann, and Jason L. Jordan became owners and settlers. In 1832, James McCartney and Robert Owen bought the quarter-section on which the town is located, and the town lots were laid out by William B. Fant. It was then incorporated under the name of Vienna; but the United States Post Office Department rejected the name, and called it New Hope, for the Methodist church in the community.
