Margaret Swain covers the various forms of needlework that were (and are) indigenious to Scotland and Norther England. Her study begins with the necessities of needlework - siting some of the oldest existing examples. Her historical study covers the many uses of early needlework starting with the 12th century culminating with the more familar decorative needlework of the late 19th century. The book has one chapter devoted to Mary, Queen of Scots - one the most known needle workers of region.
There are references to the social and political importances of needlework. This book is an excellent read for anyone interested in the background of needlework, its influences and developed through time.
