This is an interesting but VERY disappointing book. Buyers should be aware that this is NOT a work of cartography. It consists of historical, mostly advertising, material reproduced at a variety of scales. Most of the maps are virtually unusable without strong lenses -- the maps were not originally intended to be either accurate or complete, but to fulfill a promotional and attention getting function. In this book they are used essentially as decorations for the text. The book is of interest in the history of railroading and covers a variety of local, regional and chronological areas but does not constitute an atlas -- the maps contained are incidental to the material covered. There is no systematic or chronological coverage of the development of railroads -- rather, everything is tailored to the bits and pieces of old magazines and posters which constitute the contents.

A very important collectable book.
This is a very collectable book for the Railfan and Railroad history buff. This copy was gorgeously produced, very well bound and more than adequate size for the buyer's visual pleasure. It is a "coffeetable book" of a finest type.
