Heming & Tearlach
This is the story of cousins set upon finding out who is hunting their respective clans for destroying. While the previous (The Eternal Highlander) was about "watering the bloodline", these two are not set on a course to find "outsiders" to have children with. They are trying to find and stop rumors and men who wish to wipe out their whole lineage. Along the way each is captured and their respective stories are told in this book. Heming is the son of Jankyn (Cathal's cousin in the first and married to Bridgets sister) and holds the wolf characteristics of his clan. He is captured and tortured without mercy. He is tortured for the secrets contained in his blood and the secrets outsiders believe about them (imortality, demons, soul stealing, healing powers, etc.). While captive his saviour comes from cousin of the laird when she finds him held without cause. Her life at risk, she cannot watch innocent men tortured for naught. With a plan of action to free him and three other captives - she sets about it. Finding hiding for all 5 of them (and her pets) she frees them to hide until two of the men are well enough to travel and also until keep security is lax enough to leave. She saves him with her very lifeblood, at the same time finding out what he is. Along their travels back to his keep, she falls for him, regardless of his bloodline. He falls for her as his mate and tries to save her when they are beset upon. The danger is not only to him - but she is promised to marry a horrible man in order for her dowry to be given back to her cousin in the bargain. Even while knowing what he is, her men stand firm and allow him to take the lead and call him laird. Short story (half the book as Tearlach's story is the other half) the twists cannot be many and the story straightforward and swift. They infiltrate the keep holding Brona and save her. Read to find out how they settle their story of love. Tearlach is also held captive and tortured. He is not tortured for being vampire, but for information about where his family resides and all the members of his clan hidden so that they can been systematically killed off. Along with him in his cell is kept a woman kidnapped for her keep and to be forcibly wed to her captor. During the ensuing days of capture they chat and find common stories and bonds to help each other through the struggle. He is beaten in silence as he refuses to have her listen to him scream for she has gifted him with calm during the days of his stay. After the torture she finds him to be what he is when she is cut to "feed" him. Still, she is set upon the path to free herself and him as well. Having the skill to do so when she stole a piece of metal and also the wits to save them, she sets out to do so. She lived her life with a brother and a father who allowed her freedom to play with the boy and learn many skills not taught to ladies of the era. Time after time, she has the wit to formulate a plan and carry it through like a man would. She saves Tearlach on many occasions. During their ride to the court to save his life (he is accused of murdering her brother and kidnapping her) they fall for each other. There is danger in the hunters do not give up and other dangers strike when Hemings captors find her as well. After all is said and done, he delivers her to court as promised and rides away to his clan. She waits for 2 months for him to come back and claim her as she loves him. When he does not, she acts....find out what she does and how it ends. Their story is better than Hemings, but his is good as well.
