Judge Deborah Knott has agreed to marry her childhood friend, Deputy Sheriff Dwight Bryant, but it's hardly the love match of the century. Indeed she now questions whether friendship, mutual history and good sex are really enough to make a strong marriage. Her antidote to cold feet: head for the hills. When asked to fill in for a vacationing judge in Cedar Gap Deborah readily agrees. It seems the perfect place to clear her head but she arrives in time to hear the case against a young man who's been arrested for the brutal murder of a prominent doctor. Then, with the suspicious death of a second resident, Deborah realizes that she must examine Cedar Gap through critical eyes. And what she sees will rock her with an entirely new theory about the murder case...and her impending marriage.

Enjoyed this book immensely. Am very much of a history and country person myself. Can just imagine the tremendous "Leaf Colors" and people as depicted in the story. Brought back memories of my childhood as we travelled down through the south from Illinois to Florida. The murder mystery so many twists and turns. Kept me guessing all the way to the end. Usually I can figure it out by the 2nd or 3rd chapters. This one just wonderful writing. Keep up the good stories. Excellent recommend to any one, all avenues, subjects covered. All ages. Young and middle and old age, too.

Exciting mystery set in the Appalachian Mtns
This was another spell binding novel set in the Blueridge Mountains known as the High Country. The plot was riveting and the outcome surprising. A must read recommendation.

Colors of all kinds
North Carolina, like Scotland, has its low coast and its highlands. Deborah takes off to the mountains for a week's judicial substitution, and winds up in a crushed car down a pretty serious slope, cutting herself out of a seatbelt with the edge of a key. She also needs a few days in a motel at the end to figure out what she is going to do with Dwight. In between you can enjoy the colors--both seasonal and human--of the region. The descriptions are as usual delicous, the characters ditto. I am collecting the series, little by little, from alibris' trusty distributors, and am closing in on the --er, kill. The whole shebang.
