Seller's Description:
Fine in fine jacket. Fine, fresh, unread copy in equally fine dust jacket. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. 333 p. with bibliography, index. Illustrated. She may today be known best as the mother of the woman who wrote "Frankenstein" but Mary Wollstonecraft was a pioneering 18th century feminist who lived a life as radical as her vision of a fairer world. After youthful years in poverty and with an abusive father, Thomas Paine's publisher, Joseph Johnson, determined to make her a writer. One most famous result was her great feminist document "Vindication of The Rights of Women", which brough her fame throughout Europe. It insisted that women reap all the new liberties men were celebrating since the fall of the Bastille. She lived fully, socializing with great painters, poets, and revolutionaries of her era, fell in love with a fickle American, unmarried bore a daughter (Fanny). She finally found peace with Willia Godwin but died giving birth to daughter Mary.
