Upon first hearing the etudes performed here by Piers Lane, a listener might be inclined to agree with history. The etudes are in the great Romantic tradition of piano etudes by Chopin, Liszt, through to Rachmaninov, that combines melody, often flowing or lyrical, with technically challenging accompaniment. They also bring to mind Mendelssohn's Songs without Words. Henselt's etudes are not as immediately appealing or obvious in their educational value as those other composers' works. An epigram heads nearly every etude, stating its character. However skillfully Lane conveys that character or handles the technical challenges, Henselt's work has to be studied to be appreciated, and preferably by a pianist or someone who at least understands the basics of playing the piano.
