"In the mid-1960s, Thompson spent almost two years living with the controversial [Hell's] Angels, cycling up and down the coast, reveling in the anarchic spirit of their clan, and, as befits their name, raising hell. His book successfully captures a singular moment in American history, when the biker lifestyle was first defined, and when such countercultural movements were electrifying and horrifying America"--Amazon.com.

"like Genghis Khan on an iron horse, a monster steed with a fiery anus,"by Hunter Thompson as he describes one of the scene at California Labor day weekend as the notorious Hell's Angels blow into town ready to rock and roll.
When most of us wouldn't shake hands with an Angel, Hunter practically lives with them for two years to write a book about their experiences. During those two years he shares many drunken and drug induced nights and more then once shared some nasty beatings.
I never really knew much about the lives of motor cycle gangs in the mid sixties but Hunter Thompson did a wonderful job of describing them to me. I really enjoyed reading this book and like any of Hunter's books, I'd highly recommend it.

A rarity.
Hunter S.Thompson was a great rarity: a journalist with allegiance only to the truth. The
results were formidable: as a consequence
he was hard to employ but explosive to read.
Go for it!!

screw it on pay it no mind
This is the book that helped ruin my life, so I heartily endorse it.
Read the book, buy a harley (an old one- kick start- controls on the proper side of the bike)
and take a trip out to the edge.

Gonzo journalism from the master
Hunter Thompson's first book has little in common with his more well-known novel Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, except a break-kneck speed and biting tone, but fans of the later will be more than pleased with this read. Thompson rode with the Angels for a period of time in the late 1960's, and saw first-hand the reaction the townsfolk gave to the bikers, and how a situation could escalate in seconds. It is a thrilling and insightful account of a period of time long passed, and a must-read for fans of the author.
