But look to those more questionable actions and qualities which are "highly esteemed among men,"--" a fine high spirit,"--" a proper pride,"--" a glorious ambi' tion,"--" a thorough knowledge of the world,"--wit, talent, genius, learning, and so forth, --things which make up the virtues and accomplishments of the unregenerate man, and render him the idol of the circle in which he moves: --alas! what are all these things in the sight of God? what are they, even now, when weighed in the balance of the Sanctuary? and what will they be, in that day when God "shall lay judgment to the line and righteousness to the plummet?" (Is. xxviii. 17.)--St. Augustine tells their right name: "Splendid Sins!" But time fails; and I must conclude by a few brief remarks, in the way of application. First, let no one so far misrepresent or misunderstand our statements, as to consider them in any way discouraging to the humble and sincere seeker after salvation. For while we declare (and our Church declares), that our own works are as unable to purchase grace as to purchase salvation itself, the gracious invitation and sure promise stands as free and as firm as ever, and can never be too often repeated in the ears of perishing sinners: "Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and "ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened "unto you.
