It's not clear exactly what kind of a series the "Royal Philharmonic Masterworks Audiophile Collection" might be, but it's something less than what meets the eye. This disc seems to be a reissue of a hybrid multichannel disc that has gone through several iterations on labels like Germany's Membran and the ubiquitous budget line Intersound. The sound can, however, live up to the audiophile billing (at least as auditioned on a good conventional stereo), with unusual depth and a really gorgeous representation of the timpani flourishes in the Haydn Symphony No. 103 in E flat major, "Drum Roll." The performances, while they can't match the booklet claim of "rarely heard abandon that excites and thrills over and over again" (look to the right of that, and you see clip art), are crisp and straightforward. British conductor Jane Glover, for many years the director of the London Mozart Players, clocks in with readings that are distinguished in their brisk economy from most of those that Royal Philharmonic...
