This 2014 album of Franz Joseph Haydn's Piano Sonata No. 62 in E flat major; Ludwig van Beethoven's Bagatelles, Op. 119; and Franz Schubert's Piano Sonata No. 21 in B flat major, D. 960, shows Kalish's eloquence in phrasing and controlled touch, and his joy in playing this music is fully communicated. Charming as they are, though, the Haydn sonata and the Beethoven bagatelles seem like warm-ups for the extraordinary performance of the Schubert sonata, in which Kalish demonstrates powers of concentration, attention to form, and a spiritual wholeness that elevates the performance.
