Since Have a Nice Day: Super Hits of the '70s is Rhino's best-selling series, it isn't surprising that the label has created a number of spin-offs and sequels designed to cash in on its good name. What it is surprising is how they continue to find new ways to recycle the series and its mainstream '70s pop, discovering new themes within the same songs every few months. Have a Nice Night: Romantic Hits of the '70s appeared just a few months after the gargantuan Have a Nice Decade box set, but the twist is, this is a collection of adult contemporary and MOR love songs, many of which didn't make the box at all. Granted, five of the 11 tracks ("I'd Really Love to See You Tonight," "Lead Me On," "Midnight at the Oasis," "Dancing in the Moonlight," "Help Me Make It Through the Night") were on various volumes of Have a Nice Day, and three of them were on the box, but there are more new songs to the Have a Nice... series than ever before. The best of them, "I Love a Rainy Night," didn't chart until 1981, but it fits into the mellow, late-night vibe of the compilation. The remaining new numbers -- "Let Me Love You Tonight," "This Night Won't Last Forever," "Ships," "Don't Tell Me Goodnight," and "Night Hours," which has never been available on another various-artists '70s collection -- are pleasant, but not essential. The same thing could be said for this album -- it's entertaining enough, but it's not really necessary. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi
