What a guy is Harry Orwell. Slow and weary, a creaky middle-aged guy who is a bit of a taker in the pilot: "Such dust as dreams are made of."
Go back to the days when you had to find a phone booth to make a call, where the chase involves transit buses. People smoke during meals, you could cut yourself on the men's lapels, and all the chicks drive Mustang convertibles with whitewalls. The series is noted for its literate scripts, and Jannsen is the last great detective in a line that stretches back to William Powell and that Bogart guy. With stops at Mitchum, Dick Powell, Charles McGraw and for a bad guy, Laird Cregar, Sidney Greenstreet and wow! Jack Palance. This series nobly follows on with some pretty fine actors themselves, including the excellent Anthony Zerbe, later in the series. Pretty decent transfer, the film of the day looks a bit dull in today's digital world, but tell yourself you're looking back into history and you'll be most pleased.
