Sanitation The director must inform himself on the latest camp sanitation. A good place to get such information is from a medical officer in the United States Army. When I was first to have the medical care of a boys' camp, numbering nearly two hundred men and boys, I went down to Governors Island in New York Harbor and spent an hour with the surgeon in charge, which has proved of value to me beyond description. These officers are always open to any intelligent inquiry during their hours on duty, and I have found them most courteous and helpful. Dietetics The director should also inform himself on the simple principles of dietics and food values. Quantity is not always the only thing to consider in choosing and serving a boy's appetite. The preparation of food is a science as well as an art, and the chemistry of it is as precise as the chemistry of the laboratory. This is a subject which does not receive the attention that it deserves, and this is true of many homes as well as camps. To a very large extent, larger than the average person realizes, is the comfort and happiness of the home dependent on carefully selected and prepared food, Boys' Growth I cite growth to show the importance of food values. Besides the wear and tear of the day's work there is a proportionate amount of work in merely keeping alive--and this waste and wear and tear on the engine must be met as intelligently as possible. In a growing boy, however, there is still another factor to be considered, and that is that material must be supplied for his growth plus the food which supplies the actual loss of substance. Good. Photographs & drawings; 8vo 8"-9" tall; 398 pages; HC in original pictorial green cloth. 1st edition, May 1911. Lighter green cloth with pictorial title design to cover and spine in darker green and yellow. Pictorial elements to cover lightly surface rubbed with some loss of crispness to the images; title lettering at spine a little dulled. Text block soundly bound but endpages split in the inner hinges. Cloth crimped at spine ends and lightly rubbed at corner tips; a few mild bumps to board edges. Prior owner name penned to front endpage; mild foxing confined to lining sheets. Dim catalog numeral at spine, presumably the remanant of the owner's personal library numbering system along with a faint tape shadow across the spine near tail.
