Harley Davidson Roadhouse Blues is an 18-song collection of modern blues put together by The Right Stuff and seemingly sponsored by Harley Davidson, as the booklet consists of lots of pictures of bikes and basically reads like an advertisement. Harley Davidson Roadhouse Blues is an 18-song collection of modern blues put together by The Right Stuff and seemingly sponsored by Harley Davidson, as the booklet consists of lots of pictures of bikes and basically reads like an advertisement. The tracks are taken from a variety of labels from different eras (1970s to the present) and the collection is a mix of hard-driving party blues like George Thorogood's energetic take on "Shake Your Money Maker," Freddie King's "I'm Ready," and Son Seal's "I Can't Hold Out," slow, sad electric blues like Stevie Ray Vaughan's "The Sky Is Crying" and Lonnie Brooks' "In the Dark," and poppy midtempo numbers from Robert Cray ("Smoking Gun"), Susan Tedeschi ("Little By Little"), and Bonnie Raitt ("The Road's My Middle Name"). They also found room for a few songs that one would be rather unlikely to hear in a roadhouse anytime soon, like the authentic and raw Delta blues "61 Highway" by Mississippi Fred McDowell or the quiet and philosophical "Just Live Your Life" by Otis Taylor. The roar of revving Harleys would drown out the subtleties of those songs for sure. Fans of middle-of-the-road blues will find this to be a mostly pleasant collection of textbook blues. Those who like a little excitement and verve in their blues will have to look elsewhere. ~ Tim Sendra, Rovi
