Grumley and his partner, Robert Ferro, were founding members of The Violet Quill. The Violet Quill were a group of seven gay male writers in the era between the Stonewall Riots and the AIDS epidemic who read their writings to each other and critiqued them. Other members included Edmund White, Felice Picano, Andrew Holleran, George Whitmore, and Christopher Cox. Ed Gallucci is the first magazine photographer to photograph Bruce Springsteen and over 40 covers of Newsweek.
