The style is so very modern that it is hoped these few notes may be sufficient to render the whole perfectly intelligible. The metre is what has been called long Iambic, consisting of not less than fourteen nor more than fifteen syllables, with a break or cassura at the end of the eighth. Next to the Ormulum, the most important work of this age is the Rhyming Chronicle of Robert of Gloucester, to whom is also attributed a voluminous collection of the lives of the principal saints in the calendar. The language is more modern than that of the Ormulum, composed probably about the year 1300 or a little later.
