This is an abridged version of one of the classic books on functional and decorative ropework. Few people would need to proceed beyond this volume. However, it shares with the original the faults of antiquated photography and poor layout. There are numerous knots on each of the photographic plates, which forces the reader to move back and forth. Additionally, the photos aren't useful for understanding all but the simplest knots. Contemporary volumes feature much better graphics, to say nothing of the on-line sites that feature animations. Graumont's book is useful primarily as a reference to the more obscure aspects of ropework, but doesn't prove helpful to the beginner who's interested in learning to tie, weave or braid.
