Not illustrated. 1882 Excerpt: ...Then, again, one exercise may have for its aim the cultivation of the taste for the beautiful in form; another, the development of the power by which impressions of form are retained and recalled at will; and still another, the cultivation of the inventive faculty. Some of these exercises are suited to the regular drawing-book, others are not; and for this reason the practice-books are made a part of this course. Provision is made for the practice-books to contain exercises in rapid drawing, or 11 time drawing" as it is called; exercises in drawing from memory; dictation exercises; exercises in enlarging and in reduction; initiatory exercises in design; and examination exercises. In addition to this, certain pages are reserved for any lesson that the teacher may desire to give to the class. With regard to the drawings from memory, the use of the practice-book removes that temptation to dishonesty which may exist when the original model from which the pupil learned the form is between the covers of the drawing-book, in which it is required that he shall repeat it entirely from recollection. When the exercises are confined to' the regular drawing-book, the programme is unyielding; the teacher has no option in the matter. The plan mapped out by the author, who can have no knowledge of the special needs of the class, must be followed, as best it can be, whether suited or unsuited to the circumstances. By the system here adopted, the teacher is left free to pursue that course which seems the wisest and the best in any particular case. Far greater success in instruction can be obtained by the free judgment of a competent teacher, than by mere "machine" work.
