People either love him or hate him. That's how things have been throughout his career as a game warden. This book, in Parker's own words, is the story of his extraordinary career-one that has earned him the national reputation as "the toughest game warden of them all." It was in his native Tennessee as a state game warden that Parker started to establish his reputation. But the way he performed his duties among citizens who were unfamiliar with game laws, and were far from eager to learn about them, led to a career as an agent for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. As a federal agent, Parker became known not only in the areas he served but also nationwide. In his supervision of Virginia and Maryland areas, where high officials from Washington, D.C. were accustomed to hunting without heeding the law, Parker ignored the social or political status of violators. He arrested them and faced up to the often painful consequences. But Parker is not an unfeeling robot. Chapter 10, for instance, tells of the time he and another warden found a boy who, in extenuating circumstances, had a shot a goose before official shooting time. The poignant incident (chosen for condensation in Reader's Digest) shows another side of Parker. Willie J. Parker's story is one of long hours under the toughest weather conditions and often against armed and dangerous game-law violators. It is a combination of detective story, outdoor adventure, and quiet heroism. Sometimes as you read you'll feel the hair stand up on the back of your neck. Other times you'll laugh at Parker's audacity and quick wit. And once in a while you ma feel a lump in your throat.
