Homesteading in the Calm Eye of the Storm is a companion book to my self-help book: COMPLEX PTSD: From Surviving to Thriving. Homesteading is also a memoir of my journey of recovering from C-PTSD. Written in a more playful, easier to read style than my other books, it is much less dense and relatively free of psychological jargon. Several previewers have described it as rich, poignant, funny and full of self-disclosive anecdotes that are sure to help other survivors in their recovery."Homesteading" has two parts. In Part I, I escape from my dysfunctional family and backpack around the world seeking happiness while I unconsciously flee my suffering. In Part II, I wander into the jungles of psychological theory and technique. I shift my focus from global adventurer to inner world explorer. The many hits and misses of my recovery efforts are detailed in this book. Eventually, I discover what works, and gradually move from struggling to survive to discovering how to thrive.Very gradually I find meaning, belonging and fulfillment. My fear shrinks, my toxic shame melts away, and peace of mind becomes my touchstone. My psyche heals as my self-kindness, self-care, and self-protection continuously grow.Eventually, I break the pattern of being attracted to painful relationships that mirror my experiences with my parents. This in turn frees me to find a number of truly intimate and comforting relationships.

Pete Walker's 3 books have changed my life in wonderful ways i can't even describe. I read them in the perfect order for me. Complex PTSD -> Homesteading -> Tao of Fully Feeling ... and am so glad i did. All treasures!
Homesteading is Pete's autobiography that begins when he's a very young boy, somehow surviving his horribly abusive and dysfunctional family. He's quite candid about his life and adventures, as he tries to sort it all out. We get to be with him all along his extended life path as he grows up, attends college, finds himself in the military, and eventually travels around the world.
Naturally, everything goes through the filters of his early childhood trauma and those devastating lifelong effects he doesn't recognize. (Neither did i for most of the book.) Since that's all he's known and been, he's simply trying to live his life. "The goldfish doesn't know it's in the water" is such an appropriate description here.
Many/most of us live in/with the ongoing effects of whatever traumas we've experienced, esp in childhood, when we were not equipped to process them at all.
Pete's story is wild and crazy and boring and heartwarming and heartbreaking. His adventures and relationships with so many different people and cultures in different places are always colored by his background as he slowly, slowly comes out of the fog that molded (even protected) him, allowing him to cope, to evolve into a powerful person who's truly able to support others to do the same with deep compassion.
He's so relatable. He's so insightful. He's so open. His story is so valuable. Today, he's a successful, cutting edge professional psychotherapist who's helping to bring his colleagues around to adequately addressing these fundamental issues that affect most people at some point in their lives. From a quiet, passive, disempowered child into a strong advocate who walks his talk for authenticity in his profession, Pete's story is so worth reading. I'm sure I'll read it again. It'd make an incredible film!
