On the first weekend of each June, Gypsies traveling for days and dozens of miles in ornate wagons pulled by colorful cobs converge on the township of Appleby in Northern England just as they have for over three centuries to buy and sell horses. This remarkable journey and its culminating celebration at Appleby Fair are seldom witnessed by outsiders to the Romani Gypsy culture as they were by John S. Hockensmith in 2004 and 2005. Hockensmith traveled as a guest of prominent Gypsy families on the back roads and highways leading to Appleby and recorded the drama of the horses and gathering as can only bee seen from inside this guarded clan. The first 100 pages of the book is a 10, 000-word narrative, accompanied by more than 235 travel images, followed by a brief history of the Gypsies' last 1, 000 years in Europe with 15 historical images from the University of Liverpool archives. The second section of the book is an 84pp layout of 40 artistic images on two page spreads.
