The third Broadway revival of the 1959 musical Gypsy closed on May 30, 2004; the fourth, chronicled on this album, opened on March 27, 2008, a gap of less than four years. Ordinarily, even a perennially popular show like Gypsy would be revived on Broadway only, say, once a decade. But few questioned the wisdom of mounting the show again in 2008, and it quickly became a hit before winning three Tony Awards. The reason, simply, is casting.
