They sought eagerly for some time on the corpse-bestrewn banks, where the blood of friend and foe had mingled and frozen together into little sheets of ice--ice of blood, that would afterwards thaw, and nourish the same soil, and make the grass grow. At last they found him whom they sought, reclining against a pile of dead champions, with life fast ebbing through his numerous trickling wounds, and the light of his eyes fast fading into a dull glaze. "Heaven be thanked, he lives yet!" said Gustavus, as he held his ear close, to listen for the faint beatings of his honest heart. With water and some stimulants they soon brought him round; and Gustavus was eagerly chafing and pressing his hands, when the giant son of the forest fully opened his eyes, and, while looking earnestly at Gustavus, consciousness returned; the two friends smiled at each other, such a smile as means a world of love between man and man, and Gustavus repeated, "Heaven be praised, thou art alive!"
