One of three volumes in Time Life's Guitar Rock series (not including the original two-disc set titled simply Guitar Rock), Guitar Rock: Guitar Power features a selection of songs, mostly from the '80s, that one may or may not associate with the concept of "guitar power." It isn't that the music is bad; in fact, there are a ton of great singles here, including the Stray Cats' "Rock This Town," Blondie's "One Way or Another," Sweet's "Ballroom Blitz," Run-D.M.C.'s "Walk This Way," and Jefferson Starship's "We Built This City." However, the range of styles collected here is kind of schizophrenic -- new wave pop, glam, rockabilly revival, rap, slick mainstream pop/rock -- and probably not what listeners are looking for when they pick up a compilation called Guitar Rock: Guitar Power. But even if the title is misleading and it isn't musically cohesive, this is a fine collection of some top-notch singles, and it can be a very entertaining listen if that's all you're looking for. ~ Steve Huey, Rovi
