Guitarist Tampa Red and pianist Big Maceo Merriweather made a lot of music together during the years 1941-1946, and the records were released on Bluebird under both of their names. In 1999 the Indigo label reissued 24 titles under the heading of Essential Guitar & Piano Duets. Although the omission of both the "Texas Stomp" and the "Detroit Jump" undermines the credibility of the word "essential," this is a fine compilation and a great way to appreciate the work of these honest and colorfully expressive men. Their songs reflected the lives they lived, their relationships with women, and the personal habits that brought pleasure, confusion, and even discomfort to everyone involved. Indigo's Guitar & Piano Duets came out within months of a similar Tampa Red and Big Maceo compilation on EPM Musique (The Great Piano/Guitar Duo) which covered the same time period. With only four titles in common, these two discs complement each other and could coexist beautifully in your private music collection. ~ arwulf arwulf, Rovi
