The Guilford County Militia Records Book was recorded from 1806 through 1854. During this period, Guilford County supplied two regiments-the First and Second Regiment of the Guilford Militia-and one cavalry unit. The Guilford County Militia Records Book was set during a unique phase of the County's history with the County seat's relocation from Martinville (near the present site of the Guilford Courthouse National Military Park) to Greensborough (now downtown Greensboro) in 1808. By the 1830s, the "First Regiment of the Guilford Militia" was renamed the 57th Regiment of the North Carolina Militia. The "Second Regiment of the Guilford Militia" was renamed the 58th Regiment of the North Carolina Militia. The Guilford County Militia Records Book records mostly courts martial judgments of the First Regiment. In addition, this book contains rosters of officers, the names of courts martial defendants and the disciplinary actions they faced as well as the names of those exempted from militia service.
