Las dos primeras partes de la novela se publicaron en dicha revista en el transcurso de dos a???os y poco despu???s aparecieron editadas aparte con el t???tulo A???o 1805. A fines de 1869 la obra entera qued??? impresa y en 2009 form??? parte de la lista de los 100 Libros M???s Vendidos. Es una de las obras cumbres de la literatura rusa y sin lugar a dudas de la literatura universal. En ella, Tolst???i quiso narrar las vicisitudes de numerosos personajes de todo tipo y condici???n a lo largo de unos cincuenta a???os de historia rusa, desde las guerras napole???nicas hasta m???s all??? de mediados del siglo XIX. Una parte de la cr???tica afirma que el sentido original del t???tulo ser???a Guerra y mundo. De hecho, las palabras paz y mundo son hom???nimas en ruso y se escriben igual a partir de la reforma ortogr???fica rusa de 1918. Sin embargo, Tolst???i mismo tradujo el t???tulo al franc???s como La Guerre et la Paix. Tolst???i dio tard???amente con este t???tulo definitivo inspir???ndose en la obra del te???rico anarquista franc???s Pierre Joseph Proudhon (La Guerre et la Paix, 1861), al que encontr??? en Bruselas en 1861 y hacia el que sent???a un profundo respeto.
